2011 Lincoln MKZ HybridLincoln is a brand of opposites. The vehicle line-up, with five nameplates, attempts to cater to a large portion of the luxury car market with everything from a mid-size car to a full-size SUV. As the large vehicle craze is slowly but surely losing steam, this leaves two products in the portfolio to seriously consider.
One is the MKX, a very popular crossover and the other, a yet to be truly appreciated car, the MKZ. I say appreciated because it lives in the shadow of another medium-sized luxury car, the Lexus ES 350, which is not offered with a hybrid alternative, and truly because the MKZ, especially in hybrid form, is more than the sum of its parts.

I’m not going to pretend and say that these cars are aimed at the young and very active. That would be like saying Joan Rivers has never had cosmetic surgery. The Lincoln MKZ draws admiring looks from the older crowd. Now, I’ve not yet gotten there myself and should I be so lucky, I too will want a relaxing and cozy retirement. I do know that many people, as they reach a certain age after having worked all their lives, raised children and paid mortgages are looking to reward themselves with nicer things.

There are many ways to make yourself feel good: going on trips, eating at fancy restaurants and, perhaps the biggest payoff for a lifetime of hard toil, purchasing a new car. Over the years, I’ve been asked by family and friends what they should buy now that all they really require is comfort, peace of mind and a tad of luxury. The Lincoln MKZ delivers on all these points.

Generally conservative, the MKZ, like all Lincoln products, is distinguishable thanks to its large chromed waterfall grille. The only other noteworthy aspect of the car, and likely the only one to receive negative comments, is the taillight cluster. They are quite large and seem out of place on this smaller car. Like the front fascia, similar examples are found on other Lincolns.

The cabin is a reflection of the car’s exterior shell: simple. The entire dashboard consist of a few narrow bars of controls, ergonomically positioned on what is no more than a big “T” made with nice plastics and genuine wood inserts. Along with leather-covered perches, these elements bring a touch of class to a very neutral, yet pleasant, environment.

2012 Hyundai Accent GLThe last-generation Hyundai Accent lived in an era when subcompact cars hadn’t quite become the hot item they are today. As Hyundai’s cheapest, it had to look safe, sensible and laid-back. So, worthy as this little machine was, it never got cocky about it where visuals were concerned.
Fluidic Sculpture, meet Accent
For the new 2012 model, Hyundai’s stylists tossed that modest stuff out the window and cranked the styling of their latest work up a few notches.

Sure – the new Accent won’t turn heads like a flaming Lamborghini rolling down the road, but for something so affordable, the character lines, aggressive fascia and sophistication really do it justice. The sharp and detailed body looks impressive – a little like a shrunken Sonata. That’s not a bad thing.

It’s always nice to be well-dressed for a fight, after all. And playing in the subcompact car market, which is Canada’s hottest, is a battle and a half these days.

The subcompact car is no longer a boring, transportation-related appliance. Models in this segment are becoming sensible status symbols in a serious way as shoppers demand affordable models they can be proud to look at, own and drive. Folks can now brag about owning the new Fiesta, Accent or Mazda2.

Like their buyers, automakers are using the new-age breed of subcompact car to out-do one another.

New hardware and cabin

Incidentally, outdoing the competition has become Hyundai’s latest mission – so the rampaging automaker ensured the new Accent will turn in exceptional mileage and performance figures while packing all the must-have attributes today’s subcompact shopper wants.

One of these attributes is a cabin that feels richer and more upscale than the price tag suggests. As in any competitor, it’s lined almost entirely with crispy plastic panels – though it all feels solid, nicely bolted together and of high quality. Fresh, modern and new, too.

2011 Audi Urban SpyderThe car known simply as the Audi ‘Urban Concept‘ is turning out to be one of the more vocal concepts of the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

It was originally spied on the streets of Berlin. After the cat jumped out of the bag, Audi came clean with the official press release and renderings. And now a twist that we didn’t see coming (and didn’t necessarily want to see): The Urban Concept comes in Spyder open-top bodystyle.

We knew from Audi’s initial press release that the urban concept’s roof and doors slide backwards to allow for entry, but as it turns out, the roof can come off altogether. Albeit in a separate model.

As you can quickly see when comparing pictures, the wraparound greenhouse on the convertible is entirely different from the larger windshield and retracting side-door windows on the original. The convertible is an airier alternative to the tiny hard-top.

All the other exterior hardware looks the same, including the skinny, freestanding, 21-inch wheels and flat nose. The only difference is that the tires are traditional black rather than white.

The Spyder also retains the same 1+1 layout, ultralight build, lithium-ion battery and dual-motor powertrain as the hard-top.

Both variants of the Urban Concept will appear at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, which opens to media on September 13. Follow our complete coverage of the event thus far, by clicking here.

Jaguar C-X16Jaguar made it official they are working on a new sports coupe, and it will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in concept form this September.

The car is codenamed the Jaguar C-X16, but it is the base for the upcoming XE sportscar. It slots below the XK, and according to Jaguar, sets new class benchmarks in design, vehicle dynamics and technology.

The C-x16 is done by the same design team who did XJ, XF and XK – headed by Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum, so it’s not going to be an uggo, that’s for sure! It will probably spawn a convertible version as well. No details on the technicalities yet.

Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars commented: ‘Great Jaguars have always been beautiful, innovative and have looked firmly to the future. The finished C-X16 concept has the potential to do these things while retaining the ability to surprise, to excite and invigorate.’

Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar Cars commented: ‘Jaguar has set in place bold, ambitious plans for the future.  This production concept demonstrates the depth of design and engineering ability we have within Jaguar to make these plans come to life – I look forward to sharing this latest, exciting step at the Frankfurt Motor Show.’

Ferrari 750 Monza SpyderYou are here: Home » Car History

Dammit, dammit, dammit! Auction catalogues are evil, evil things. Or at least they are for me. Like that Merc I mentioned in another post, this 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spyder is a seriously great car in a bunch of different ways.

For one thing, it’s a bit odd for a Ferrari, engine-wise that is. ‘Neath the bonnet you will find, of all things a three liter four banger engine. These Monzas were very light and nimble and frickin’ world-beaters. Think of them as aluminum bodied Miatas with a bored and stroked stock four banger punched out from two to three liters, and you’ll get a pretty good idea what they drive like.

No, I haven’t driven one (sadly). But I have seen them race, and you underestimate these little guys at your own peril. They were sort of like 50s, front engined versions of Chevron B19s. Luckily, for the competitors, Enzo only made 25 of the little beasts, whereas Chevron cranked out the 19s like sausages. Another plus for the 750 Monza over the B19s is that they’re much more streetable. Not that you should, but you could … or I could at any rate.

So, in addition to rarity, pedigree, a great, if unexpected mill, what else does this Monza have going for it that makes RM think it will get between $2,500,000-$3,250,000 US when it roils across the auction block at Monterey?

For starters, I mentioned that it is one of only 35 built, and a matching-numbers example (rare for an ex-racer, where parts get swapped out every weekend). Also, and this is SO cool, this particular 750 had a starring role in On the Beach, starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner and was driven on screen by Fred Astaire. Yeah, THAT Fred Astaire. And, if I might digress here (and I think I will) On The Beach was not only a great movie (the brittleness of Ava Gardner not withstanding (what Sinatra saw in her, I’ll never understand)) but it is also a great, great car movie. Well, part of it is. The part where Fred takes out the Monza (painted white in the film) for one last race with a bunch of other crazy gearheads when the world is literally coming to an end. Talk about literally going out in a blaze of glory, that’s Mr. Astaire’s aim. Sadly, he ends up winning, rather than kicking the bucket … but he remedies that situation later in the film with great flair and aplomb that would make any gearhead worth the grease under their nails and the scars on their knuckles say, “Yeah man, THAT’S the way to go!”

Anyway, in addition to all that Hollywood cool factor, this particular 750 Monza was also the Brussels Motor Show car for Ferrari in 1955, and it also boasts a race-winning history, including John Von Neumann, Phil Hill, Harrison Evans. Yes, that would be America’s first world driving Champion, Phil Hill.

Restored? Hells yeah! It took them two years to get it looking like this. RM says that ” … this Ferrari 750 Monza is one of the finest examples built and, according to Ferrari authority Brooke Betz, the best example he has ever seen, on content alone.” I ain’t bitching with him, I can tell you that right now.

The mechanical deets work out like this: A 260 hp, 2,999 cc DOHC four-cylinder engine featuring double Weber 58 mm DCOA/3 carburetors, dry sump lubrication (natch), five-speed manual transmission (double natch), independent front suspension with unequal-length A-arms and coil springs, de Dion rear axle with transverse leaf springs and trailing arms (scary, sure, but that was pretty much the coin of the realm back then, rear suspension wise), four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. and a short-short wheelbase of 88.6″

This 750 Monza, serial number 0492M, entered 22 West Coast races in 1955-56, and in that time it won twice, scored seven 2nd place finishes, was 3rd twice and 4th four times. That, as they say, is a “significant racing history”.Source: Jalopnik
